It was SERIAL, and it was close enough to RS-232 for most COMMON
uses. But it was NOT RS-232

Somebody challenged Radio Shack about calling their serial port
"RS-232". The Radio Shack answer was, "Of course it is really RS-232. The
RS in RS-232 stands for "Radio Shack", so we can make any changes that we
want in the standard."
