Humming Variac?

A Variac is a kinda transformer. Transformers often
hum. Especialally when the iron laminates in the core
start to come loose. So it's a bit of an old age phenomenon. Even small HF
ferite-based transformers
can squeek (arghhh yuck) if the frequency (product) comes into the hearing
range..........
