I don't see it that way at all. As Jules alluded to, it's an excellent
re-use of old hardware that's not collectible anyway. Why invent the
wheel each time you want to do a project? If you're going to mass
produce a bunch of ST-506 emulation interfaces then a custom designed
board is certainly the way to go. But if you want to design a project
that can be built by nearly anyone with minimal electronic skills and old
PCs laying around (just about everyone here) then using old PC hardware
is a perfect solution.
