There is a way around that - boot off a RedHat or a SuSE CD, in rescue
mode.
Failing possession of those, go to LinuxCare and download & burn their
rescue CD. It's about 50 MB. Or go to Tom's rootboot floppy.
http://www.toms.net/rb and make the floppy.
All four environments give you access to the hard drive and the CD
reader.
