I have some DEC loopback connectors that are 2x7, complete with DEC
label tywrapped to the wire... I'll get a part number. I figured the
real DEC cables used the same connector housing.

According to the specs I read, there's different insertion forces
for different models of pins - spring tension in the pin body itself.
Now... there _are_ different models for different size/shaped pins,
but that's in addition to designated spring force.
