All hardware goes through a phase where:

New and costs alot
Older, costs half as much still in demand
Obsolete, fraction of what it sold for new if you can find somebody who
wants one
Ancient, stuff is given away or trashed
So old that its hard to find anymore, collectors start looking/paying for it
Rare, a few systems that were never made in great quantity and are prised by
collectors who pay some crazy prices for it.

While C64 equipment is still sellable because of the few retro collectors
they were made in such a quantity that a 1541 drive will never be rare or
extremely valuable in our lifetimes.
