ot: getting a "coff"

Several of the programs I try to run on my "classic dos" machine give
the error message:

<filepath\filename>:not coff (check for viruses)

I don't yet have a virus scanner, but these files were downloaded from
trusted sources
I don't think I have a virus. What is this error message?
