Odd PDP-11 tape related question

I've seen a similar "feature" with Exabyte Eliant 820 drives. They will spit
out 8200-generated tapes, unless they are write protected.
HP DDS2-drives (at least the ones I have seen) will spit out all tapes(e.g.
90 m metal) _unless_ they have media recognition.
