BUT, can you use it if the RM05 was written on a 36-bit PDP-10 system? On a positive note, after doing some looking it seems most likely that the data was written on either a PDP-11/70 or a VAX.

The idea of getting a disk image of the disks is probably the best, and it can be done with more than just a VAX running UNIX, it can also be done using VMS, and can also be done on a PDP-11. It looks like SIMH supports RM05's, so it would be a simple matter of booting the right OS in SIMH, and reading the data that way. Getting data out of SIMH would be tricky, but not impossible.
