The difference between the uV3100-9x and the
corresponding VAX 4000-10x[A] is, as you said,
nothing at all. The mainboards are identical
and a simple command at the console will flick
it from one identity to the other.
To have a real VAX 4000-10x[A] you need the appropriate
case so that you have somewhere to mount the DSSI and
Qbus I/O panels. You also need the internal cables to
go from the mainboard connectors to said panels.
If you tell the mainboard to play like a uV3100-9x,
I believe that it will pay no attention to either the
Qbus or DSSI.
