Rumor has it that Scott Stevens may have mentioned these words:

>They should have packed the drive in air-popped popcorn. I've shipped
>eBay items that way a few times. It's cheaper than styrofoam peanuts
>and it's what they used to use for packing material. It's important to
>isolate the protected item from the popcorn, of course, in a sealed
>plastic bag.

That's one heckuvan idear!

The problem with styrofoam peanuts isn't so much the peanuts, it's the cost
of shipping for the peanuts due to the bulk. Short of commonly available
reversible shrink-ray guns, that can't change. :-)

Altho, for very large items, I don't think real popcorn would be quite as
1) economical or 2) structural -- but having not tested those theories, the
above is pure speculation.

For small items, it seems a great idea, especially if you're doing some
late-nite packing.

>I always put an insert in those packages saying 'This popcorn not for
>human consumption. Give to the birds.'

Some of the best carrots I've ever had were sold as deer-feed, and quite
inexpensive...
