I searched my email archive and yes, I found my response to this topic six
years ago when it came up. And for one section, everybody should have TeX,
right? uudecode? And we understand Morse code too, right?

You can thank Eric Allman for those blunders. RFC822 specifically state
that the SMTP server is to NOT modify the email as it goes through (as long
as it conforms to the standard US 7-bit ASCII character set. Anything
outside of the 7-bit ASCII character set is implementation dependant and
anything goes). But in order to remain compatible with existing Unix
software, lines starting with 'From ' had to be ``quoted'' else mail reading
agents would get horribly confused (why they stored email in a single file
is anybody's guess. I assume because early Unix systems couldn't deal with
dozens or hundreds of files in a directory).

And the single `.' on a line itself is quoted because that's how you
signal END OF DATA in the SMTP protocol (although there are provisions given
in RFC822 to handle this situation correctly). Again, because of Eric
Allman, who probably (IMHO) felt it would take too many processing cycles to
actually *check* for those conditions, did otherwise. I'm guessing.

This is on topic, because sendmail (may it rot in Hell) is 16 years old,
and thus falls under the charter of this mailing list. Oh, and ASCII is
definitely more than 10 years old.
