With this talk about finding a quasi-useful OS to run on
older machines (a small linux) I might suggest that you
take a look at Minix:

A project from the venerable Andrew Tanenbaum, whose books
most of us are familiar with.
1.5 was ported to many platforms (Atari, Macintosh, some others)
and 2.0 runs on an 8088 to a Pentium. It's rather neat.
