   Geez! An original 5 Mb Seagate 506! I used to have a maintenance
manual for it but I haven't seen it in at least 10 years. I also have a
couple of NIB 506s somewhere. It's probably easier to just stick in a
newer MFM drive that has more tracks, heads etc and use it, a Seagate 225
should work fine. A part of it will be wasted but that's no loss.

  The squeal is probably coming from the ground strap on the bottom
spindle. Try putting a bit of powered graphite on it and see if that
helps. Or you can bend the strap to change the tension. Some people just
remove it all together, it's not recommended but I've never heard of it
causing a problem.
