To bring it back on topic, I made the prototype circuit boards for one
of the first removable HD companys (DMA Systems) and talked quite a bit
with the engineers who did the design. I was told that as long as the
area is reasonably clean, a clean room environment was not necessary
(for a short time period) to run the drives with the cover off. Of
course the obvious precautions like a relatively dust free room, and not
smoking around the running drives need to be observed.
