Kilobaud was a spin-off from "73" Magazine, a mag for amateur radio operators.

"73" publisher Wayne Green originally put the computer hobbyist articles in 73,
but when the amount of computer articles started to choke out the ham radio
articles, he created a new magazine called "Kilobaud". There was still the
occasional computer article in 73, but usually only those that directly applied to
ham radio. I had the first issue when I was younger, because I was a
subscriber to 73 and IIRC Green sent all 73 subscribers a couple of copies of
Kilobaud to try and get us to subscribe to it as well.

That's where I saw my first KIM-1 ad and my first COSMAC Elf ad, and it took
me until last year to finally get a KIM (actually, I have two. One with a neat
history, one that's a little cleaner.)
