Once upon a time, PASCAL was popular, and many people thought it was the
wave of the future. Then C steamrolled over it.

Many. There was APL microcode for several IBM mainframes. And just about
every language that ran on a Xerox D-machine (Alto, Dorado, Dolphin, Dandelion,
etc.) had its own special microcode.
