Agreed, the shortest stopping distance ma be achievved by kkeping the
tyres just at the point where they are about to slide. This is why
cadence braking works better than just standing on the pedal.

I have seen people commplain on TV consumer programmes that ABS cused
them to crash because they couldn't stop in the available distance, they
seem to miss the point that if they couldn't stop with ABS then they
almost certainly couldn't stop manually either beacuse the road surface
was too slippery.
