This involves hardware, specifically hardware that few people have access
to. Can't we choose something that's more algorithmically oriented, as
opposed to systemic?

I actually wanted to do this for VCF 1.0 and 2.0, but nobody else on the
VCF planning committee was hip to it. One of these years (probably not
this one) I will introduce coding competitions, with prizes for the
winners, as a regular event. I think it would be very fun and extremely
competitive, and will make for some interesting code.
Hmm, on second thought, if I get some time to plan it, maybe I will
introduce a coding competition for this year.
