Going through this exercise a second time I've chosen the Olympus C-2000Z.

Features that are, in my opinion, essential:
        - Macro : Allows near focussing.
        - External Flash attachment : allows additional flash assets
which can help the picture tremendously.
        - Max resolution feasible - You can always downsample to get
a picture that loads fast on a web page, but you can't go
           the other way.
        - Smart Media : only one that makes sense these days. Cards
                up to 32MB are available.
        - Fast upload capabilitity - either an easy access smart media
card or USB. The latter is more convienient, the former is
           minimal.

 Non-essential but nice to have:
External DC power pack for longer life.
Video out capability for TV preview
        Infrared remote control.
