The safest choice. Manually add a user with root priveleges in the passwd
file with no password. This will allow you to get into the system easily
until you've got it all configured properly, then you can go back and
either delete the user or add a password.

To add a root user with no password, the following line will work:

username::0:0:Temp Root User:/:/bin/sh

This will work even if the passwd file is shadowed.
