To follow up my success I pulled out this piece and I'm trying to ascertain
if it belongs in the unit or perhaps fell into the space between the
keyboard and the cover at some other time.
The piece I pulled out is pictured here:

It is rectangular at its base, made of that stiff paper/cardboard that is
used in teletypes to shield things, and is cut so that a portion can be
bent perpindicular to the main piece. There are score cuts to facilitate
bending.
I'm looking for it in the exploded parts pages but nothing yet.
