Thanks everyone, yup there is a rubber "cover" for the print head stud and
you can still buy them from "Western Numerical Control"

http://www.westnc.com/teletype.html) Their nearby and I've purchased paper
tape and paper but didn't realize they had print head doobers as well.
(they also have replacement type cylinders)
I like Jim's suggestion of using a stick on foot, that would work as well.
Although I do worry about about having it pop off and getting wedged into
the works below.
