IIRC, there is a spring loaded retainer that holds the wheel in place.
The retainer fits in a slot in the wheel and keeps it properly aligned.
It should only fit one way so, the problem might be somewhere else. If
you're using a serial connection, check the speed, parity, and
handshaking settings on the printer and in your software.

I don't recall how that printer senses the "Index"" on the wheel. On
some of them, there is a missing "finger" on the wheel and a detector to
sense the wheel position. If the wheel has more than one missing finger
or the detector isn't working, you could get gibberish.

As for the ribbons: Until a couple of years ago, Office Depot kept them
in their regular inventory. I believe the same ribbon is used in some
popular Diablo printers so, they may still have them. The Xreference in
the store may not list that particular prineter so take an old ribbon
with you to the store. If it looks close, it's the right one!
