Actually if going with MFM drives probably the best thing you can do is to
get a VAXstation 2000 (aka Hard Drive Formatter), and hunt up Quantum
Q540's and Maxtor XT-2190's at your local junk dealers, swap meets and
scrappers.
I still cringe when I think of the one local scrapper telling me he'd
scrapped and ENTIRE crate of UNUSED RD54's :^(
