VAX 11/780 to 785 upgrade, what does it take?

The CPU backplane gets swapped along with the board set.
I believe the console 11/03 may get more memory as well (my memory
is a bit hazy on that). IIRC it goes to 28kw from 16kw.

I think power is still the same.
The console software load is different

The 11/785 has more wcs so you need 11/785 console software with
different microcode -- so without the RX01 disks you'll never
boot the machine.
