You can use MAIL on the VAXen, as well as some fairly nice 3rd party apps.
I do email all the time at home on a VT420 connected to a DECserver,
talking to my one OpenVMS system which functions as a private email server
among other things. One a serial console you can also read news and surf
the net quite easily. Once you add DECwindows you've really got it nice,
especially if you step up to something like a PWS433au, which is quite
reasonably priced these days.
