As someone else already pointed it, it is indeed a socket for DSP RAM
expansion. NeXT sold a 56 KB upgrade SIMM for that slot, and at least
one third-party hardware manufacturer sold an upgrade SIMM in the >256KB
range. Very few people bought them, though, so they're incredibly
difficult to find. OTOH it does mean that very little software exists to
take advantage of the additional DSP RAM. I'm not sure I could name any
off the top of my head.
