        If they still follow the older Bell 103 and 212A standards,
which most, if not all, of the newer modems I've used still do. If
the older equipment you're trying to connect to predates those, or
just doesn't follow them, then that's a whole different story.

        I started out with an old Racal-Vadic modem that had been
used on a serial terminal to dial into a mainframe. It was 1200bps
so was fairly speedy still when I got it.
