Whatever the stuff is, it is really, really nasty! The worst part is
cleaning the crud off the board and surrounding components...

I've been using solder made by Alpha Metals, and have had very good luck
with it. The flux gives off nearly no smell, and does not turn brown when
heated. I imagine it is some type of no-clean flux, but I still use flux
remover to clean it from any boards I work on.
