I've cut open some really badly manufactured AUI drop cables before. I've
seen all kinds of quality problems. Some of the worst I've seen were
things like: cold solder joints, flux everywhere, frayed wire ends where
the wire is connected to the contact, melted wire insulation...

All the drop cables I've ever made or repaired used the type of 4 pair
cable you describe. I've never seen an AUI cable that used multiple coax
cables in it.

I prefer the crimp type contacts myself, since they are even easier to
assemble than the solder type. (Provided you have the tool to crimp the
pins anyway.)
