I finally broke down and asked the Tech SUpport folks at Mylex what my problem
with the DAC960PD controller might be, and got the following, in case anyone
else is hoping to use one of their controllers, with which I've had really
decent results under LINUX and various UNIX for the PC versions.
=============================================================
Dear Richard:
Mylex hardware RAID controllers are not supported in Windows 9x or
Windows Me, and there are no drivers available. The controller is
detected and can run in DOS compatibility mode but that limits the array
size, and performance will slow and unstable.
Individual hard drives are not detected - the controller masks that from
the operating system. Even if you're not booting from the controller, you
must have the controller bios enabled in order for the array to be
minimally visible to Windows 9x - in the absence of the proper driver, the
system has to see the "drive" through the motherboard bios.

Subject: DAC960 under Win9x
I've been struggling for some time now to get a DAC960PD single-channel
controller to work together with a pair of ST32550W drives under Windows
9x. My goal has been to utilize the two as a striped pair, without any
other redundancy. Though I have installed the drivers downloaded from your
website, and though the controller is recognized and satisfactorily
installed, the drives don't appear to exist correctly under the OS.
What's the correct way to install a striped pair under Win9x? There's no
apparent support for Win9x on your site. Is there something I'm missing?
thanks,
Richard Erlacher
