Still used quite a bit, in fact -- the effect is very impressive if you have
the right equipment. I have a lab here with a 10' rear-projection screen
hooked up to an SGI Octane2 runninning chemical and biochemical
visualization...really quite impressive, and fun to play with too :) the CAVE
port of Quake supports this kind of stereo mode, which is very fun on a giant
screen :)
