I personally whacked one of mine during a similar operation. I hit the
side of the PCB that sits on the end of the CRT, and it torqued and broke
the tip off the tube. One hiss later... I have a spare motherboard, power
supply, floppy, enclosure... I've adopted the habit of removing the board
from the CRT before removing anything else around it.
It's not all that hard to do... I guess I've done it 0.5% of the times
I've worked on a classic Mac. :-(
