I've just had a look at the RS Components site (because the
Farnell site is down):

They list "Ultra-bright" surface-mount white LEDs, stock number
267-1812, for ?4.71 *each*. Brightness is 40millicandelas. I expect
you'll be able to find a similar part from a U.S. supplier. These
LEDs are often used for LCD backlighting in portable gadgets.
I think Maxim do an application note on "Driving White LEDs".
