I've heard of IEE488 - I might have a look at the specs later - it might be
possible to implement a simple GPIB controller in an 8052 or a PIC
(surprisingly enough, PICs are on topic - they were developed in the late 70s
by General Instrument).

Not that that's a major problem. Now all I need is the IEE488/GPIB/HPIB spec
and a datasheet for the 96LS488.
