A passive backplan can be considered a bus, i.e. the bus interconnecting all controllers. I have e.g. the parts for an ACER500D, which had 1 card with CPU/memory/floppy disk/comport and printerport, one card for the video, etc.

If you stick it into a normal pc, you will have a disaster.
