Generally, I would agree with you. But I also could easily see
establishing a friendly relationship with a tool shop over the years,
to the point where they might well be willing to lend me a tool briefly
under such circumstances.

Absent more information, I don't feel ready to hold an opinion on
whether anything morally wrong happened.
