  I've used 'sifex' to format the HDD and from there I tried to
  restore the system. I don't have any original installation media -
  just backups made on the machine itself.

  I begin to suspect that either there is still something wrong with
  disk that I fail to see (it's the third one that I and the previous
  owner tried) or the backups are in some way specific to a system or
  partition layout which of course is now completely lost.
