PDF is a close relative of PostScript -- which is why ghostview can
read PDF files. It works well -- unlike xpdf which was never any good
in my experience, and Adobe's Linux version of acroread which doesn't
even start on my (Fedora 1) system.
By the way, on the question "what format for mixed OCR-text and images
-- simple: PDF of course.
