IRIX 5.3 and resetting root password

Entries at the top of /etc/password override NIS, and NIS doesn't
bother with /etc/shadow but does check /etc/passwd. /etc/nsswitch.conf
doesn't exist in IRIX 5.3, so that's not it either.
