Why not disable the X login / xdm and login on the text console for now?
Have you looked at the gettys in /etc/inittab? Maybe a getty is running
on the first serial port or can be enabled to do so...
Reconfigure the network so that the machine fits into your LAN
addressing and try to log in via telnet?
