VaxStation Keyboard Insanity

Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I have two VaxStation 3100/M76's that refuse
to respond to the keyboard!

After the POST, I get the usual error messages for missing
disks and missing AUI adaptor. I then get the ">>>"
prompt, and that's it.

I'm using several LK-201's, and they all behave the same.
Both VaxStations behave the same.

Is there a special 'dance' that I have to do before
the VaxStation responds to the keyboard?
Are they really fragile, or something?
