Many CD-R drives can read CD-RW disks, provided you have UDF support.
For example, on the couple Windows-98 systems I've set up for others, I
always install Adaptec Direct CD, and then immediately uninstall it,
but keep the UDF driver installed. Afterwards, the CD-ROM drive is
able to handle CD-RW disks fine, unless the drive isn't multi-read.
