the memory and some hardware assistance in segmentation and you come
out ahead. Unfortunately it's pretty hard to add protection once you've
had the idea of doing the segmentation in the cheapest possible way
(and thus allowing segments to overlap, and having many ways to refer to
the same segment/offset address). Protection is also expensive to add.
I don't _know_ that this was Intel's thinking, but it's an interesting
possibility.
