if the power supply droops - I feed mine from a 13.8 volt battery/charger
combination (overkill - 11 Amp capacity!) and I get those symptoms when the
12VDC input connector isn't seated right. Open up and read the voltages on
the power connector for one of the disc drives - I suspect both the 5V and
12V lines will be sagging: below 4.75V or 11.5V and you can expect problems.
