Pardon while I wander off topic..

But couldn't you hack serial connectivity into a 49G+ via the IrDA
interface? (Granted custom software would probably be involved. As well
as it not being as "nice" as a true serial port.)

These guys claim to have some (all?) of the hardware end of things
already worked out. http://www.8bit-micro.com/trs-80-irda.htm (Never
heard of them, found via Google, nor do they look to be cheap.)
