Having gone trhough the schematics for the CoCo and the IBM PC, I can
assure you the former is much better than the latter!

OK, the CoCo's bit-banged serial port was a bit of a kludge, but remember
it was originally designed to link to a printer. It was therefore
primarily intended for output, and a bit-banging serial output is not
such a problem.

I didn't overly care for the CoCo 1/2 graphics modes, but they came from
the Motorola chipset, so as you said, you can't blame RatShack for that.
