At the ST506/ST412 interface, the signals are solidly digital. It's
only in the time domain that they are continuous.

If you were to build your drive emulator for "the other end of the
adapter", as you put it, it would be host-specific. A drive emulator
that plugged into ISA bus wouldn't be much use on a MicroVAX.
