A lot of brand new ex-USSR tubes are on eBay at
reasonable prices. The sellers are generally in
ex-Soviet client states and from what I've experienced
and read are as reliable if not more so than local
sellers. Shipping is amazingly fast and reasonable.
I've been very happy with my tubes. Watch out! Some
are made with an upside down "5" for a "2" which is
very ugly - the guy who thought of this "ingenious"
cost-savings measure probably got a medal.
I am glad to say no test equipment was destroyed in
the making of my clocks and watches - especially as an
owner of a perfectly functioning HP 5623B
counter/timer/dvm, complete with nixie tubes.
Ironically, this counter, still pretty darn accurate
after the oven warms up, has been used to adjust the
crystal oscillator capacitors in my clocks!
